In 1974, Minsk was named a Hero City for its great sufferings from wars that had engulfed during the ancient days up to the 20th century. The city of Minsk has been the capital of the Bvelorussian SSR from 1919-1991. During World War II, 80% of the city has been destroyed and was only rebuilt in the 50s, due to the order of Stalin. For those who are interested to experience and see the Soviet Union almost alive, Minsk is an awesome city to visit. Minsk is famous for its cultural contributions for Belarus. A number of museums have been erected for Minsk, which include Museum of History and Culture of Belarus, Museum of history of Great Patriotic War, and National Arts Museum. We could say that the people of Minsk are lovers of arts due to the fact that eleven edifices were erected only for the sole purpose of ballet and opera performances, as well as for theatrical plays. Among the places where the Minsk art lovers swarmed for excellent performances are the State Russian Drama Theatre and Byelorussian Academic Theatre, and the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Honestly, tourism is not the priority of Minsk; hence English is not really spoken. Visitors of Minsk are encouraged to learn some basic key phrases, so that they could communicate well with the locals.
